A book which is alive with the burning passion Visconti brought to his work in films, a homage to one of Italy's most famous directors. His artistic career is illustrated by a wealth of photographs, documents and numerous previously unpublished writings.
Starting with Obsession (1942), and winding up with The Innocent (1976), Visconti traces the development of Italian Neo-realism, studded with unforgettable masterpieces like The Earth Trembles, Death in Venice and Ludwig II.
In his long and prolific career Visconti also played an important role as a theatre director: his productions are considered one of the high points in Italian theatre, especially those for the Scala in Milan, starring a superb Maria Callas.
A whole section is dedicated to the stars who contributed to making Visconti's works such a success and those who owed him fame and fortune: Anna Magnani, Alain Delon, Romy Schneider,
Claudia Cardinale, Helmut Berger, and Charlotte Rampling.
